About the People's Library:
The People’s Library is a decentralized, community-driven model designed to provide access to essential resources without financial barriers. Our goal is to create local, parallel economies that empower communities through cooperation, shared access, and sustainability. Legal advisors play a crucial role in developing the legal frameworks that protect shared resources and ensure ethical governance.
Role Overview:
We are seeking volunteer Legal Advisors to help research, design, and document legal structures that will allow local People’s Libraries to operate securely and effectively. This work will focus on protecting shared resources and land, ensuring that local operators cannot exploit the system for personal gain, and complying with relevant legal frameworks in different countries. This role is ideal for legal professionals passionate about alternative economic models, commons-based resource management, and community-driven solutions.
Legal Advisor Role
Responsibilities:
- Research existing legal models that protect shared community assets (e.g., cooperatives, trusts, non-profits)
- Identify legal risks and governance structures for local People's Libraries
- Develop a step-by-step legal guide for establishing and operating a People's Library in different legal contexts
- Draft template agreements, policies, and governance documents to safeguard resources and prevent personal exploitation
- Collaborate with other legal professionals to ensure broad applicability across multiple jurisdictions
- Contribute to an open-source legal framework that can be adapted by communities worldwide
Who We're Looking For:
- Legal professionals, law students, or researchers with expertise in non-profit law, cooperative law, land trusts, or commons governance
- Passionate about collaborative, non-market economic models
- Able to conduct country-specific legal research and provide guidance for different jurisdictions
- Skilled in legal writing, contracts, and policy development
- Able to work independently and collaboratively with a global team
