Help Bring the People's Library to Life
App Developer
Location: Remote / Flexible
Time Commitment: Estimated 5-10 hours per month (Flexible, Project-Based)
About the People's Library:
The People’s Library is a decentralized, community-driven model designed to provide access to essential resources without financial barriers. Our goal is to create local, parallel economies that empower communities through cooperation, shared access, and sustainability.
Developers play a crucial role in building the digital infrastructure that empowers communities to manage shared resources with transparency and ease.
Role Overview:
We’re looking for coders and developers who want to put their technical skills to work building the digital infrastructure for a different kind of economy. The goal is to create a white-label, open-source platform that local People’s Libraries can use to manage shared assets, contributions, and participation. This tool will help communities organize themselves around access, not ownership—and you’ll help make that possible.
App Developer Role
Responsibilities:
- Design a flexible, modular system that local chapters can easily customize and deploy
- Build features for tracking shared resources (tools, vehicles, space, etc.) and member usage
- Develop systems for recording time-based contributions and participation
- Ensure ease of use for non-technical community members and organizers
- Collaborate with other volunteers to understand practical needs on the ground
- Create documentation so others can adapt or extend the code in their communities
Who We're Looking For:
- Experienced or aspiring developers who want to build software that serves people, not profit
- Strong communicators who can translate technical ideas into simple tools
- Passionate about open-source, decentralized design, and community empowerment
- Comfortable with collaborative development and evolving project goals
- Familiar with web app development (stack flexible, but bonus for open-source or low-barrier tools)
- Aligned with the vision of the People’s Library and excited to co-create its digital backbone
What You’ll Gain:
- A chance to help launch a digital tool that could empower communities across the world
- Hands-on experience building cooperative tech for real-world use
- Collaboration with a purpose-driven team
- Recognition on the website and in future platform credits
- The opportunity to shape a tool that reflects your values and supports long-term social transformation
