The People's Library:
A Vision for Shared Abundance

A World Beyond Scarcity—Built by Communities,
for Communities

Scarcity isn’t natural—it’s designed. The People’s Library is an idea anyone can build in their community, creating shared access to everything needed for a thriving life.

The People's Library

What is the People's Library?

The People’s Library is an idea that empowers communities to build local, non-market economies where resources flow based on access, cooperation, and well-being rather than profit. Instead of relying solely on money, transactions, or competition to meet our needs, the People’s Library provides a way to organize shared resources outside of financial exchange.

It is not a replacement for markets—it is a complement to them. By creating a parallel economy, the People’s Library ensures that access is based on need rather than wealth, offering communities a real choice in how they meet their needs.

A Library For Everything

How It Works

Think of a public library: you don’t need to buy books to read them—you simply borrow what you need, use it, and return it for others to access. Now, imagine expanding that model beyond books to include housing, transportation, tools, food, clothing, and anything else necessary for a thriving life.

To use the People’s Library, you simply become a member of your local chapter and gain access to its shared resources. Whether you need a tool for a project, a place to stay, or transportation for the day, you check out what you need and return it when you’re done—just like borrowing a book. As a member, you’re also expected to contribute what you can—whether it’s time, skills, or resources—so that the library remains sustainable and beneficial for everyone.

Importantly, the People’s Library does not “redistribute wealth” or take from some to give to others. Instead, it builds an alternative way of accessing resources where community members share and support each other, creating shared abundance outside of traditional market forces.

THE SOLUTION TO HUMANITY'S MANY PROBLEMS

Why It’s Needed

Scarcity is not a natural state—it is a product of an economic system designed to restrict access and generate profit. Market economies, whether capitalist, socialist, or communist, are structured around competition, ownership, and profit, creating artificial scarcity that forces people to compete just to survive. As a result, our economy prioritizes endless consumption and extraction, leading to inequality, ecological collapse, and social disconnection.

The People’s Library offers a different path—one where we reclaim our collective power, rebuild the commons, and create a future where everyone has enough to live and thrive. By organizing shared resources through local, community-driven models, the People’s Library helps break the cycle of scarcity and fosters cooperation and well-being.
